Members of NESDC will often put on public demonstrations with their working stock dogs.  Often these demonstrations are combined with a community event.  Notice of dates and time are posted on this web site.

Dog trials are one of the ways handlers like to test their stock dog's ability to control and move livestock.  Most trials use a pre set course consisting of an outrun, lift, fetch, drive or wear, and pen.  Open classes, which are for experienced dogs, may also add a shed, a split, or another obstacle.  Different points are awarded by the judge or scorekeeper for each part of the course.

Fun day trials provide an opportunity for handlers to test their dogs in a non-competitive situation.  Fun days offer handlers and their dogs the opportunity to try new things without the stress of a real competition.  Fun days may involve unusual obstacles, situations, or new opportunities.

Working stock dogs come in all different sizes, shapes and colors.  They are bred for their brains, not their looks!

Darlene C. Hutchins

14 September 2009

We lost one of our treasured members today, Darlene Hutchins, after her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  Darlene was 54.

Darlene loved her border collies and as recently as this 4th of July weekend, she could be seen trialing her beloved dogs.  She was known for her wonderful sense of humor but she also encouraged other handlers and worked with new handlers.  She loved the dogs, loved the sheepdog trials, loved the friendships made at trials.

A service will be held on Tuesday, 22 September 2009, at the Heald Funeral Home, Springvale, ME.

Darlene will be missed by all of her friends and family.  In lieu of flowers her family has requested that donations be made to the charity of your choice in Darlene’s name.

She will be missed by us and by many.  She fought a good fight but her body finally gave out.  She is pain-free and at peace.   We grieve.
